Broad Mission

To work for the safety, rights, and inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their families in the greater Holland area.

Current Goal

When the Holland City Council rejected including LGBT people in its anti-discrimination ordinance and policies in June of 2011, Holland is Ready made providing such protections its primary goal.

Holland is Ready is a 501C4 organization governed by a Board of Directors. HIR relies on volunteers and donors to make this mission a reality.

Holland Is Ready formed in response to Hope College determining that Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black could not speak at a college forum on sexuality. Concerned about the impact that action could have on the image of the Holland area, and its inclusivity of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, about 150 people attending its first meeting in January of 2010 and the group has met on a monthly basis since then. Its mission from the start has been to make the greater Holland area more inclusive of LGBT people and to ensure their safety and rights.

To accomplish that goal, Holland Is Ready educates the public through guest speakers, public meetings, community events, and voter education.  It became a 501c4 organization in the fall of 2011 and is governed by a Board of Directors that includes community leaders and people of various faiths, professions, backgrounds, and gender.
